Methyl Soyate Named to EPA’s Safer Chemical Ingredients List
As companies work to improve safety for their employees and meet regulatory requirements, interest in products that can replace petroleum-based chemicals is expanding. Based on testing provided by The United Soybean Board, methyl soyate, a methyl ester derived from soybean oil, earned a spot on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Safer Chemical Ingredients List. This designation allows unlimited use of methyl soyate in products seeking the Safer Choice label involved in the EPA program.
To earn a Safer Choice label, a product must comply with the Safer Choice Standard which includes criteria associated with human health and the environment. Components such as solvents are considered an individual component class ingredient and have their own criteria to meet. These products must contain only the safest of ingredients. Currently, there are more than 2,000 products on this list.
The safety advantages of methyl soyate include high flash point greater than 360 degrees F, allowing it to withstand extremely high temperatures. Methyl soyate has low volatile organic compound (VOC) levels, low toxicity compared to other substances and is not listed as a Hazardous Air Pollutant, making it an environmentally-friendly option among others. These characteristics make it safer to store and handle.
Methyl soyate is not limited to safety advantages. Due to its eco-friendly nature, methyl soyate offers multiple environmental benefits. These benefits include non-ozone-depleting chemical, non-SARA reportable, readily biodegradable and has potential for reduced waste-disposal costs.
With its unique properties, methyl soyate can compete in many specialized markets that usually involve specialty products. These markets include: cleaning products, coatings, inks and adhesives, paint strippers, parts cleaners and degreasers and other removers – adhesives, mastics resins, inks, asphalt and rust. Types of cleaning products involved are: hard-surface cleaners, household cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, waterless hand cleaners, bathroom cleaners, stainless steel cleaners and graffiti removers. With U.S. soybean farmers growing soybeans on nearly 90 million acres, a consistent supply of these products can always be relied upon.
Methyl soyate is extremely versatile and can be used to formulate many types of products. Not limited to creating new products, it also provides effective solvency with a kauri-butanol value of 58 and is compatible with other organic solvents. It is safer, eco-friendly and has many unique properties that make it a better solution in comparison to other solvents. With the new designation on the Safer Chemicals Ingredients List, the future looks even brighter.
