Concrete Sealer Relies on U.S. Soy for Environmental and Performance Benefits
More than 2.7 million miles of paved roadways stretch across the United States. Every year, highway departments across the country are continually resurfacing these roadways. PoreShield hopes to be the hero of public works, extending the life of roadways and bridges for years to come and reducing the frequency of resurfacing. The Indiana-based company believes they have soybean oil to credit for the success of this product.
PoreShield, a concrete protector using soybean oil, extends the life of concrete. When sprayed on concrete, the soy-based sealant forms a hydrophobic (water resistant) barrier that protects against outside moisture and common corrosive materials used on roads during inclement weather.
Many northern states and other harsh climates around the world face a freeze-thaw cycle that creates cracks and crumbles concrete. PoreShield’s hydrophobic barrier is flexible enough to protect against freeze-thaw damage — a protection other concrete protectors don’t offer, according to PoreShield.
PoreShield has outperformed popular concrete film sealers on multiple occasions. Some concrete film sealers only penetrate millimeters into the concrete. PoreShield penetrates deep into the concrete, filling every pore with protector to extend the life of the concrete. These benefits combined prolong concrete life for seven to 10 years on average, according to the company’s data.
The PoreShield benefits are not limited to performance. The soybean oil in the concrete protector makes the product biodegradable, nontoxic and noncorrosive. In addition to those environmental benefits, soybean oil removes volatile organic compounds. Many other companies have found soybean oil to be a suitable substitute for formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals in adhesives.
With the support of the United Soybean Board and Indiana Soybean Alliance, the Indiana Department of Transportation has already treated six bridges in Wabash county with PoreShield. The original plan for the project was to split the applications up between two days, but the ease of application of PoreShield made the process into a one-day event. The project supervisor commented he was pleased his crew did not have to use specialized protective gear during the application because PoreShield doesn’t contain any chemicals harmful to humans or the environment.
